Starfall vs ABCmouse: the short answer

Starfall and ABCmouse are two of the longest-running early learning sites. They take very different approaches.

Starfall is a nonprofit site focused on phonics and early reading, with math too. Activities are short, calm and simple. Some are free, and a home membership is $35 a year.

ABCmouse is a big, guided subscription from Age of Learning. A step-by-step path of games, books, songs, puzzles and art covers reading, math, science and more from preschool through 2nd grade. Kids earn tickets to spend on a virtual room and pets.

If phonics practice on a budget is the goal, Starfall is the smart buy. If you want an all-subject program that keeps a preschooler busy, ABCmouse offers more, at a higher and less transparent price.

Teaching approach

Starfall teaches letter sounds systematically: short vowels, blending, word families and sight words, then longer vowel patterns and short stories with words read aloud when tapped. Its math covers counting, shapes and early operations. The design looks dated next to newer apps, but young kids can use it on their own.

ABCmouse is built around a 10-level learning path from preschool through 2nd grade, with Spanish navigation and some Spanish activities. Kids follow the path or explore freely. The reward system centers on earning tickets and buying virtual items, which motivates some kids and bothers some parents. Menus are busy, so younger children may need help at first.

What a lesson looks like

Starfall: A 4- or 5-year-old sings an alphabet song, does one or two letter or short-vowel activities, reads a short interactive story, and finishes with a math activity. Ten to twenty minutes is plenty.

ABCmouse: Your child opens the path and completes a few short activities, such as a phonics game, a book and a puzzle, earning tickets along the way. A typical session is 15 to 20 minutes. Parents can set the level and time limits and see what each child has done.

Price and value

As of October 2026, Starfall home membership costs $35 a year on starfall.com. In-app subscriptions cost $5.99 a month, about twice as much over a year. Some activities are free.

ABCmouse is a paid subscription with a free trial that requires a card and converts to a paid plan unless you cancel. Prices vary by promotion and platform, so confirm the amount at sign-up. Age of Learning also offers a limited free-to-play mode. See ABCmouse cost and cancellation details.

For pure phonics value, Starfall is hard to beat.

Can you use a scholarship for either?

Sometimes. Starfall is digital phonics and math curriculum, which many education savings account programs treat as an allowable instructional-materials expense. Early learning subscriptions like ABCmouse are sometimes allowable in programs that cover pre-K or educational software, but many programs serve only kindergarten and up. Each program decides. Read about education savings accounts, save your pick to your wishlist, and apply once to the scholarships your family may qualify for.

Questions

Is Starfall free?

Part of it is. A selection of activities is free with no membership. The full site costs $35 a year on starfall.com as of October 2026, while in-app subscriptions cost $5.99 a month, so buying on the website is cheaper.

Is ABCmouse worth it if Starfall is so cheap?

It depends on what you want. ABCmouse offers far more variety and a guided path across subjects. If you mainly want phonics practice, Starfall covers it for much less, and the free Khan Academy Kids covers much of what ABCmouse does.

Which is better for a 3-year-old?

ABCmouse has more toddler and preschool content, like songs, colors, shapes and art. Starfall's alphabet songs and letter activities also work for 3-year-olds. Either way, 10 to 20 minutes is plenty.

How do I avoid ABCmouse billing surprises?

Note the trial end date when you sign up, and cancel from the store or parent account before it converts. In 2020, Age of Learning agreed to a $10 million FTC settlement over how it disclosed and handled cancellations. Keep your cancellation confirmation email.

When do kids outgrow them?

Most kids outgrow both by about 2nd grade. ABCmouse's path ends at 2nd grade, and Starfall's real strength is pre-K through 1st, though its membership content extends to 5th.
