ScienceHistoryGrades 3–12 · AdultAppCourse

An ad-free documentary streaming service with 3,000+ titles in science, history, nature and technology, including a Curiosity Kids section. Plans cost $5.99 a month or $49.99 a year; the Smart Bundle adds Kidstream and Curiosity University.

What is Curiosity Stream?

Curiosity Stream is a streaming service for documentaries. John Hendricks, who created the Discovery Channel, launched it in 2015. The library has more than 3,000 titles across science, history, nature, technology, art and society, all ad-free.

For families, it works like a well-stocked science and history film library you can open any time. Originals include Stephen Hawking's Favorite Places, which won a News and Documentary Emmy.

How it works

You subscribe, sign in on a computer, phone or tablet, and browse by category. A homeschool family might use it like this:

  1. Pick a documentary that matches this week's science or history topic.
  2. Watch together, pausing to talk about what's surprising.
  3. Have kids narrate, draw or write a short summary.
  4. Follow up with a book, experiment or field trip.

Kids Mode filters out titles that aren't suitable for children, and the Curiosity Kids category collects family-friendly shows. Older kids can watch independently.

What it covers

CategoryNotes
Science, Nature, TechnologyThe core of the library for homeschool use
History, Biography, Art & SocietyGood for history and humanities unit studies
Curiosity KidsFamily-friendly titles, such as Prehistoric Worlds and Ocean Mysteries with Jeff Corwin
Smart Bundle extrasKidstream kids shows, Curiosity University lectures, Tastemade Cooking, SOMM TV

The library also has a true crime category, which is one more reason to turn on Kids Mode for younger viewers.

Who it's best for

Curiosity Stream fits families who enjoy watching and discussing documentaries, and middle and high schoolers who learn well from video. It's especially handy for unit studies.

It's not a curriculum. For structured science, start with middle school science or other homeschool science options, and use documentaries as the extra.

Pricing at a glance

As of October 2026, Standard is $5.99 a month or $49.99 a year, and the Smart Bundle is $11.99 a month or $79.99 a year. There are no contracts, and you can switch or cancel anytime.

Can a scholarship or ESA pay for it?

Usually not, though it depends. Many education savings account programs treat streaming services as entertainment rather than curriculum, while a few may allow educational video subscriptions. Each program decides. Read how scholarships and ESAs for homeschool families work and check your state, such as Arizona. Save curriculum picks to your wishlist and apply once on Edulist.

How it compares

National Geographic Kids is a free website with short videos for younger kids. Crash Course Kids offers free science videos for grades 3–5. For lesson-based science videos with quizzes, see Generation Genius or BrainPOP.
