Fix It! Grammar

$29

A six-level grammar program from the Institute for Excellence in Writing. Students find and fix errors in a few sentences a day from a continuing story, then copy the corrected passage, building grammar, punctuation, vocabulary and editing skills in about 15 minutes.

What is Fix It! Grammar?

Fix It! Grammar is a grammar curriculum from the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) in Locust Grove, Oklahoma, the publisher of Andrew Pudewa's writing courses. Instead of filling in worksheets, students edit a story. Each day they get a short passage with mistakes, find and fix them, and then copy the corrected version. Over a year, those passages tell one complete tale.

The idea is that grammar sticks when kids use it on real sentences, then carry the same editing habits into their own writing.

How it works

Each level runs about 30 weeks, four days a week, roughly 15 minutes a day. The weekly rhythm:

  1. Learn it. On day one, parent and student read the new concept together.
  2. Read it. The student looks up a bolded vocabulary word and records the meaning that fits.
  3. Mark it. The student marks a set number of items, like nouns or prepositional phrases.
  4. Fix it. The student makes a set number of corrections to capitals, punctuation and usage.
  5. Rewrite it. The student copies the corrected passage as copywork.

The Teacher's Manual shows the fully corrected sentence and explains each fix, so checking is quick.

Who it's best for

It's great for families who want a light, steady grammar habit and for students who learn by doing. IEW writing families benefit most, since the program uses the same terms and sentence openers.

Look elsewhere for a complete language arts program or for traditional diagramming. Shurley English uses jingles and sentence classification, and First Language Lessons offers gentle scripted grammar for young kids.

Pricing at a glance

As of October 2026, each level is $29 for the Teacher/Student Combo, or $19 for either book alone. IEW offers three free weeks to try it and a no-time-limit satisfaction guarantee.

Can a scholarship or ESA pay for it?

Grammar curriculum is commonly an allowable expense in education savings accounts, as described on our Arizona ESA page and Florida scholarship page. Each program decides. Save Fix It! Grammar to your wishlist and apply once through scholarships for families.

How it compares

Fix It! pairs naturally with IEW's writing courses. Essentials in Writing builds grammar into a video writing course, and Brave Writer teaches mechanics through literature copywork. Browse more writing programs or middle school writing curriculum.

Fix It! Grammar FAQs

What level of Fix It! Grammar should I start with?

IEW says students with little or no grammar background should start in Level 1, whatever their age. Otherwise, compare the level descriptions and student samples on IEW's Fix It! page and pick the one with mostly familiar concepts.

How long does Fix It! Grammar take each day?

Most days take about 15 minutes, four days a week, for about 30 weeks. Each day students mark and fix a sentence or two, then copy the corrected passage.

Is Fix It! Grammar Christian?

The Fix It! stories are retellings of fairy tales and classics, and Cathy Duffy Reviews describes the program as secular but Christian friendly. Preview the free student samples on IEW's site if content matters to your family.

Do I need the Teacher's Manual?

Yes, for the parent. It has the answer keys, explanations for each correction and the grammar glossary. Students need the Student Book, which families may copy for siblings.

Is Fix It! Grammar a complete language arts program?

No. It covers grammar, mechanics, editing, vocabulary and copywork. You'll need separate materials for composition, spelling, reading and literature.

Is the fourth edition different from the third edition?

Yes. IEW says the fourth edition rewrote the stories, expanded the teaching and improved the layout. Students can repeat a story title from the third edition without much overlap.
