Math Academy
Math Academy is an adaptive online math program that places each student with a diagnostic, then uses a knowledge graph and spaced review to move them through courses from 4th grade math to AP Calculus and university math. It costs $49 a month per student.
What is Math Academy?
Math Academy is an online math program built to teach as efficiently as possible. A student starts with a diagnostic, and from there the system decides exactly which lesson or review to give next. It covers 4th grade math through AP Calculus, plus university courses like Linear Algebra and Mathematics for Machine Learning, and an adult track called Mathematical Foundations.
It is run by Math Academy, LLC, a small company that still labels the product a beta.
How it works
The diagnostic. An adaptive, timed test looks for the edge of what your child knows. It checks both accuracy and speed, recommends a course, and estimates when your child will finish.
The knowledge graph. Behind the scenes, thousands of math topics are linked by their prerequisites. The system only teaches a topic once its foundations are solid, then keeps adding new layers that reinforce older skills.
Spaced review. Reviews are scheduled automatically so they come neither too early nor too late. Advanced problems also give credit to the simpler skills inside them, which cuts down on busywork.
XP. Progress is measured in XP, and 1 XP is about one minute of focused effort. Correct work earns XP; rushing or guessing can lose it. Quizzes come about every 150 XP and aim for scores around 80 percent.
Parents get an oversight account to set XP goals and schedules, plan vacations, share progress and set timing accommodations, such as for an IEP. Younger students may need help building habits like working problems with pencil and paper.
What it covers
| Track | Courses |
|---|---|
| Elementary and middle | 4th through 8th Grade Math, Prealgebra |
| High school | Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II or Integrated Math I–III, Precalculus, AP Calculus AB and BC, SAT Math prep |
| University | Calculus I and II, Linear Algebra, Multivariable Calculus, Differential Equations, Discrete Math, Probability and Statistics, Methods of Proof, Math for Machine Learning |
| Adults | Mathematical Foundations I–III |
ACT Math and Abstract Algebra are listed as coming soon. Trigonometry is taught inside Algebra II, Precalculus and the Integrated courses rather than as its own course.
Who it's best for
Math Academy fits self-motivated students who want to go further, faster, including gifted math students and homeschool teens who need accredited high school math with transcripts. Adults returning to math also use it.
It is a tougher fit for children who need games, characters or a teacher's encouragement, and it does not serve kids below 4th grade math.
Pricing at a glance
Math Academy is $49 a month per student, with no contract. There is no free trial, but canceling within 30 days brings an automatic full refund, and you can pause for 30 to 90 days.
Can a scholarship or ESA pay for it?
Possibly. Math Academy says it is an approved vendor for some charter homeschool networks, and online courses are often allowed in ESA programs such as the Arizona ESA. Each program decides which vendors qualify, so check your program's marketplace. Save Math Academy to your wishlist, then explore scholarships in your state and apply once on Edulist.
