MUZZY BBC
MUZZY BBC is a story-based language program first developed by the BBC, built around animated films about Muzzy, a big green creature, and his friends. The online homeschool version adds 400+ games, vocabulary videos, printables and English lesson plans for kids from preschool through about grade 8.
What is MUZZY?
MUZZY is a children's language program first developed by the BBC. It teaches through animated stories about Muzzy, a big green creature who eats clocks, and the royal family of Gondoland. Kids hear the whole story in the new language and pick up words the way they learned their first language: by seeing, hearing and repeating.
MUZZY's motto sums it up: See and Listen, Say and Learn. As of October 2026, it's sold online, on DVD, and in versions for homeschools, classrooms and libraries.
How it works
Every child starts with the first film, Muzzy in Gondoland. Each episode builds on the last with lots of repetition. A typical homeschool session might look like this:
- Watch a short story segment, with subtitles on or off.
- Watch a vocabulary builder video on one theme, like food or colors.
- Play a few of the 400+ online games for that unit.
- Do a printable worksheet, or record yourself in the online recording studio.
Parents follow lesson plans written in English, so you don't need to know the language. Pre-readers can just watch and listen. Older kids add reading and spelling tasks. Siblings of different ages can learn together.
What it covers
| Age group | What MUZZY focuses on |
|---|---|
| Toddlers and preschool | Colors, shapes, animals and household words |
| Ages 5–9 | Story, games and acting out MUZZY scenes |
| Tweens and teens | Ear training and review of school vocabulary |
MUZZY says kids meet more than 1,200 words and phrases. Cathy Duffy Reviews notes that children hear far more words than they will master, which keeps pressure low. Newer features add reading and writing in the second language.
Who it's best for
MUZZY fits homeschool families with young kids, especially when you're teaching several ages at once or have a child who can't read yet. It's also a good choice for parents who want a planned course without speaking the language.
Look elsewhere for teens who need high school credit; live classes from Homeschool Spanish Academy or a self-study tool like Rosetta Stone fit better. For a K–5 Spanish curriculum with daily lesson plans, see Calico Spanish.
Pricing at a glance
As of October 2026, the online homeschool plan costs $100 for 6 months, $149 for 12 months or $200 for 24 months, paid up front, and it renews automatically. A 6-DVD set is $159. No free trial is listed, so watch MUZZY's sample clips before you buy.
Can a scholarship or ESA pay for it?
Often, yes. A complete homeschool language course is commonly an allowed curriculum expense in ESA programs such as Arizona's ESA, though each program decides and some require approved vendors. Save MUZZY to your wishlist, check scholarships for your state and apply once on Edulist.
How it compares
- Calico Spanish is a Spanish-only K–5 curriculum with 365 lesson plans and monthly pricing.
- Dinolingo offers 50 languages and up to six kids on one plan.
- Little Pim is cheaper but shorter, and best for babies and toddlers.
