ReadingWritingGrades Pre-K–2App

A synthetic phonics game app for ages 4 to 7 with more than 850 games across 26 levels. Children learn sounds, blend to read, segment to spell and practice tricky words, with parent reports and optional no-prep lessons.

What is Phonics Hero?

Phonics Hero is a phonics app made by Phonics Hero Limited. It teaches children ages 4 to 7 to read and spell through more than 850 short games. It follows synthetic phonics, the approach used in many UK and Australian schools. Kids learn letter sounds first, then blend them to read words and break words into sounds to spell them.

Kids work through 26 levels with a cast of quirky characters. Parents get reports showing which skills are solid and which need more practice.

How it works

Each level moves through the same six steps:

  1. Learn the new sounds
  2. Read words with those sounds
  3. Spell words with those sounds
  4. Read tricky words, such as the and said
  5. Spell tricky words
  6. Read sentences

When your child starts, you can begin at Level 1 or use the placement test. In the test, kids read nonsense words so the app can check real decoding, not memorized words. Sessions of about 10 to 15 minutes work well.

For more structure, the optional Phonics Lessons give parents click-and-go teaching screens with more than 3,700 words and 2,400 sentences. A homeschool day might be a 10-minute lesson with you, then 10 minutes of games, then one worksheet.

Who it's best for

Phonics Hero is a strong pick for preschool through 2nd grade children who need lots of practice. It also suits families who want spelling covered alongside reading. It works for kids who are behind, too. Browse similar picks in phonics apps and programs and kindergarten phonics.

Look elsewhere if your child already reads well, or if you want an app with lots of books to read. For children with significant reading struggles, see programs for struggling readers.

Pricing at a glance

As of October 2026, games cost US$36 per six months on the pricing page, though another official page says from US$39. Lessons are US$42 a year, and the Homeschool Package is US$90 a year for one child. Siblings get 50% off, and there's a 7-day free trial.

Can a scholarship or ESA pay for it?

Possibly. Phonics apps and online curriculum are often allowed in ESA programs such as Arizona ESA and Florida's scholarships. Each program decides, and some only reimburse purchases made through their own marketplace. Check your state's rules on our scholarships page, save Phonics Hero to your wishlist, and apply once on Edulist to programs that may cover it.

How it compares

Teach Your Monster to Read is a free, game-based alternative with a similar UK phonics sequence, but it covers less spelling. Reading Eggs adds books, comprehension and math, at a higher price. Jolly Phonics is the classroom synthetic phonics program many schools pair with apps like this. Hooked on Phonics combines an app with printed books for US families.
