All Saxon Math levels
| Level | Grades | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Math K, 1, 2 and 3 (Nancy Larson) | K–3 | Scripted, parent-led lessons that open with The Meeting (calendar, money, patterns) and use manipulatives. Kindergarten has no student book. |
| Intermediate 3, 4 and 5 | 3–5 | Stephen Hake's texts for grades 3–5 with Power Up warm-ups. Intermediate 4 and 5 closely match Math 5/4 and 6/5. |
| Math 5/4, 6/5, 7/6 and 8/7 | 4–7 | Textbook-based middle grades, usually used in grades 4 through 7. Each lesson has warm-ups, one new increment and a mixed practice set that is mostly review. |
| Algebra 1/2 | Grade 8 | Pre-algebra. Students doing well in Math 8/7 sometimes skip it and go straight to Algebra 1. |
| Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2 | 9–11 | Core high school courses, sold in 3rd and 4th editions. A separate Geometry kit is available, and retailers suggest Algebra 2 or Geometry in grade 10. |
| Advanced Mathematics and Calculus | 11–12 | Advanced Math (precalculus level) and Calculus, both sold as kits with solutions manuals. |
Saxon Math placement test
Saxon offers a K–3 placement inventory, a middle grades test (5/4 through Algebra 1/2) and upper grades tests for Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Advanced Math and Calculus. Saxon books are skill-level, not grade-level, so place by the test, not by age.
Official Saxon Math placement test ↗Which Saxon Math level is right for my child?
Saxon Math is built for homeschool families with children from kindergarten through 12th grade who want a traditional, structured textbook with daily cumulative practice (ages 5–18). Levels are placed by skill, so a level can sit above or below your child’s school grade. When in doubt, start one level lower: early success keeps kids going.
Is Saxon Math worth the price?
Saxon is a one-time book purchase per level.

Questions
What Saxon level should my child start with?
Use a placement test, not your child's grade. As a rough guide, retailers suggest Math 5/4 in grade 4, 6/5 in grade 5, 7/6 in grade 6, 8/7 in grade 7 and Algebra 1/2 in grade 8. Single-course placement tests suggest starting a book only if your child scores above about 85 percent on the test for the level below.
