These vocabulary words are the useful, cross-subject words kids meet in books and school but rarely in everyday talk: analyze, essential, persuade, significant. Researchers Isabel Beck and colleagues call them Tier 2 words, and they're the ones most worth teaching directly. Each grade from kindergarten to 8th grade has 40 words, split into four sets of 10, with a short definition we wrote for kids and an example sentence.
This page shows the first 4th grade set as a printable list. Pick a grade below for all 40 words, or use the generator to turn any set into matching, fill-in-the-blank or word map worksheets with answer keys.
Tips for using it
- Teach a word with a kid-friendly definition, an example and a question that makes your child use it.
- Revisit words over several weeks; one exposure isn't enough.

What are Tier 2 vocabulary words?
High-utility words that mature readers use across many subjects, like compare, essential or reluctant. Tier 1 words are everyday words (dog, happy), and Tier 3 words belong to one subject (photosynthesis).
How many vocabulary words should kids learn a week?
About 5 to 10 taught directly, with plenty of reading to pick up many more. Depth matters more than the number.
Are these the same as spelling words?
No. Vocabulary lists focus on meaning; spelling lists focus on patterns. Our spelling words by grade are a separate list.
