How to write a lowercase y in cursive: Roll an overcurve hump up to the midline and down to the baseline, undercurve back up to the midline, then pull a long line down below the baseline, loop to the left, and cross at the baseline to exit.
This sheet starts with large models of capital Y and lowercase y, with a green start dot, numbered strokes, and arrows that show which way the pencil travels. Then come two rows for each form: trace, then write from the start dots. Page two joins y into the words "yak" and "yes" and the sentence "You can do yoga", so your child practices the capital and the lowercase joins in real writing.
Cursive y is one of the overcurve letters (n, m, v, x, y, z), which begin with a hump that rolls up and over to the right. When y feels easy, practice n, m, v, x next, or print the full cursive alphabet chart.
Tips for using it
- A lower loop that turns right looks like a q tail. The y loop turns left, just like g and j.
- Say the strokes out loud while writing y, for example: "roll over, pull down, swing away". Saying it keeps the shape consistent from row to row.

Questions
How do you write a capital Y in cursive?
Capital Y starts with a small cap curve at the top line, comes down to the baseline, climbs to the top line, then pulls a long line below the baseline into a loop that turns left and exits. The model at the top of the sheet numbers each stroke, so your child can see where to lift the pencil.
How does cursive y connect to the next letter?
The loop crosses at the baseline and leads into the next letter, as in 'yak' and 'yes'.
When should kids learn cursive y?
Most programs introduce cursive in 2nd or 3rd grade, once print letters are automatic. Cursive y is taught with the other overcurve letters (n, m, v, x, y, z), so it often comes later, after the undercurve and oval letters.
