In kindergarten, handwriting moves from single letters to words and the first sentences. This sheet starts with two short-vowel CVC words, cat and sit, that children can sound out as they write, then a four-word sentence with a capital, finger spaces and a period. Each line gets the classic rows: trace, write from start dots, copy, write alone.

Kindergarten goals usually include writing upper- and lowercase letters, spacing between words, and starting sentences with a capital. Keep the large lines until letters fit comfortably, then try medium. For letter review, use lowercase letter tracing; for the next step, see 1st grade handwriting.

Tips for using it

  • Teach the finger space: your child puts a finger after each word before starting the next.
  • Have your child read the sentence aloud before writing it.

Questions

How much handwriting practice does a kindergartener need?

About 10 minutes a day is plenty. Many kindergarten handwriting programs plan short daily lessons rather than long sessions.

Should kindergarteners learn cursive?

Most programs teach print in kindergarten and start cursive in 2nd or 3rd grade. A few, often in Montessori settings, start with cursive.
