Second grade writing prompts printed on handwriting guide lines sized for 2nd graders, with an optional sentence starter. The prompts ask for more than a sentence or two: write about a day when everything went wrong and how it turned out, convince your reader which season is best, explain how to take care of a pet, or write a story that begins "The map was old, and one corner was burned."
Second graders are expected to write a short paragraph with a topic sentence, details and a closing, use linking words like because and also, and tell events in order. Turn on the graphic organizer to plan before writing; it changes with the prompt type (story map, opinion planner or informative planner). Add a 2nd grade reading passage the same day; reading and writing about related ideas helps both.
Tips for using it
- Teach the hamburger paragraph. Topic sentence, three details, closing sentence.
- For opinion prompts, require the word "because" at least twice.
- Turn starters off once your child can begin a piece independently.

What should a 2nd grade writing piece include?
A clear topic or opinion, two or three supporting details or reasons, linking words, and a concluding sentence. Narratives should tell events in order with some details about actions and feelings.
Should my 2nd grader write in cursive?
Most 2nd graders still write in print. Many schools introduce cursive in 2nd or 3rd grade; switch to cursive practice in the handwriting generator when your child is ready.
