Narrative writing prompts for personal narratives, true stories from your child's own life: write about a challenge you worked through, a time a plan didn't go as expected, a place that feels special and a memory that happened there. Each prompt prints with a narrative planner (who, where and when, then beginning, middle and end) and a lined page to write the story.

A good personal narrative focuses on one small moment rather than a whole day, tells events in order, and slows down at the most important part with details about what the writer saw, heard and felt. This set shows three 4th grade prompts; change the grade for simpler "Tell about a time you…" prompts with sentence starters for K–2. For made-up stories, use creative writing prompts, and read model stories in short stories for kids.

Tips for using it

  • Zoom in. "My trip to the beach" is too big; "the moment the wave knocked me over" is just right.
  • Add one line of dialogue to bring the story to life.
  • End with what you learned or how you felt.

Questions

What is a personal narrative?

A personal narrative is a true story about something that happened to the writer, told in first person with events in order, details and feelings. It usually ends with a reflection on why the moment mattered.

How is narrative writing different from creative writing?

Narrative writing tells a story with a beginning, middle and end, and personal narratives are true. Creative writing usually means made-up stories, poems or imaginative pieces.
