A piano app that teaches through split-screen videos of a real pianist's hands plus sheet music. Wait Mode listens and pauses until you play the right notes. Free songs to start; Classic, Premium and Family plans unlock more.

What is flowkey?

flowkey is a piano learning app built around video. The screen shows a real pianist's hands from above, with the matching sheet music scrolling underneath. You play along on your own piano or keyboard, and the app listens through your microphone or a MIDI connection.

flowkey says more than 15 million people have used it. Its song arrangements are made by professional pianists, and it lists partnerships with Yamaha and ABRSM.

How it works

Pick a song or course, then use the practice tools:

  • Wait Mode: The video pauses until you play the right notes.
  • Slow Motion: Practice at a lower tempo.
  • Loop: Repeat one section until it's solid.
  • Select a hand: Learn the right and left hands separately.

Courses teach the basics of reading music, chords and theory. Most learners practice 10 to 30 minutes at a time, usually on their own.

What it covers

flowkey's library includes thousands of songs across genres and skill levels, from beginner melodies to advanced arrangements. Which songs you can open depends on your plan:

Who it's best for

flowkey fits teens and adults who want to learn particular songs and like watching a pianist's hands. Visual learners do especially well. Children under about 10 usually need something more playful and guided, like Simply Piano or Hoffman Academy. Browse more arts and music programs.

Pricing at a glance

As of October 2026, US prices run from $99.99 a year for Classic to $149.99 a year for Premium and $224.99 a year for Family. Monthly plans cost more. Yearly plans include a 7-day trial, and every plan has a 14-day money-back guarantee.

Can a scholarship or ESA pay for it?

Possibly. Some ESA programs allow music lessons and learning apps, but rules on app subscriptions vary, and we did not find flowkey listed in an official program marketplace. Each program decides. Check your state, such as Florida or Arizona, or start at our scholarships hub. Save flowkey to your wishlist and apply once on Edulist.
