Moving Beyond the Page
Secular, literature-based homeschool curriculum for ages 4–14 that teaches science, social studies and language arts through integrated, concept-based units with hands-on projects. Designed with gifted learners in mind and sold in print with 18 months of online access.
What is Moving Beyond the Page?
Moving Beyond the Page, now branded Beyond the Page, is a secular homeschool curriculum for ages 4 to 14. Kim and Keith Howe created it in 2005 for their own kindergartener. It teaches science, social studies and language arts together through big ideas, real books and hands-on projects. It was built with gifted children in mind.
How it works
The year is split into units that usually run about three weeks, with 12 to 14 lessons and a few buffer days. Each unit pairs a theme with literature. A World War II unit, for example, might use Number the Stars. Lessons mix reading, writing, experiments, cooking, art and short worksheets, and each unit ends with a project or paper. Many lessons offer a standard option and a harder one.
Younger levels are parent-led, with one to two hours of teaching a day. Around ages 7 to 10 the guide is shared, and from about age 9 the material speaks to the student while you check work with rubrics and answer keys. Hard-copy purchases include 18 months of online access, and the family license lets you print student pages for each child.

Can a scholarship or ESA pay for it?
Often. Programs such as Arizona ESA and Florida scholarships commonly allow curriculum, and the publisher says many accredited distance-learning schools use it. Each program decides. Save it to your wishlist and check scholarships in your state to apply once through Edulist.
