Vooks
An ad-free streaming library of animated read-aloud picture books with narration, music and highlighted read-along text, plus audiobooks, Spanish titles and a book-making app. $9.99 a month or $69.99 a year after a 7-day free trial.
What is Vooks?
Vooks is a streaming service for animated picture books. Vooks, Inc. takes real children's books and adds gentle animation, narration, music and sound effects. The words light up as they're read, so kids can follow along. The service is ad-free and built for families and classrooms.
A membership covers more than the videos. It includes an audio-only library called Listen, a Storyteller tool for recording your own narration, the Vooks Creator app for making books and printable activities.
How it works
Your child picks a story, or you build a playlist, and the book plays like a short, calm video. Most stories take just a few minutes. You can:
- Watch together and pause to talk about the pictures
- Let your child follow the highlighted words on their own
- Switch to Listen for bedtime or the car, with a sleep timer
- Record yourself reading a favorite title and share it with grandparents
- Download stories for offline use on trips
Vooks works in a web browser and in apps for iPhone, iPad, Android and the Amazon Appstore. Teachers can also use it for class read-alouds.
What it covers
| Feature | What you get |
|---|---|
| Animated storybooks | Hundreds of picture books in English |
| Spanish | More than 100 Spanish titles |
| Listen | Audio stories, music, sleep and toothbrush timers |
| Storyteller | Record and share your own narration |
| Creator | Kids make digital books with text, drawings and voice |
| Activities | Printable activities to go with stories |
Vooks doesn't publish a fixed title count. It calls the library growing. It doesn't include phonics lessons, quizzes or reading levels.
Who it's best for
Vooks fits kids under about 9 who love stories, plus parents who want screen time that feels like reading. It's especially handy for bilingual families and English learners. Browse more in early learning and reading apps.
It's not a reading curriculum. If your child is learning to sound out words, add a phonics program. If your child is behind, see programs for struggling readers.
Pricing at a glance
As of October 2026, families pay $9.99 a month or $69.99 a year. Teachers pay $4.99 a month or $24.99 a year. There's a 7-day free trial, though not when you redeem a code.
Can a scholarship or ESA pay for it?
Sometimes. Some ESA programs allow digital libraries as educational materials, while others limit subscriptions. Arizona ESA and Florida's scholarships each publish their own rules. Each program decides. Look up your state on our scholarships page, save Vooks to your wishlist, and apply once on Edulist.
How it compares
Epic has a much larger ebook and audiobook library for kids up to 12. ReadingIQ adds leveled books. Starfall and Reading Eggs actually teach phonics, so they pair well with Vooks. For a screen-free option, Highlights magazines bring stories and puzzles to your mailbox.
