Second graders write paragraphs, so the lines get smaller and the sentences get longer. These three sentences, including a question, are on small lines close to the size of primary notebook paper, with two traced rows, a copy row and a row to write alone. Long sentences wrap onto two rows automatically.
Second grade is also when many programs begin cursive, often in the second half of the year. Switch Letter style to Cursive to try the same sentences joined (punctuation drops out in cursive), or start with how to write in cursive. Older siblings can use the 3rd grade handwriting worksheets.
Tips for using it
- Ask for the same letter size across the whole line. Size changes are the most common 2nd grade problem.
- Have your child reread their own sentence aloud. If they can't read a word, that's the one to rewrite.

Do 2nd graders learn cursive?
Many do. Zaner-Bloser, for example, starts cursive in a grade 2 cursive book, and California law requires cursive or joined italics to be taught somewhere in grades 1 to 6. Schools choose the exact grade.
What size lines should a 2nd grader use?
Most 2nd graders move to narrower lines during the year. Start with the small setting here and switch to medium if letters look cramped or tall letters crash into the line above.
