How to write a lowercase j in cursive: Undercurve up to the midline, slant down through the baseline to the descender line, loop to the left, and swing up to cross at the baseline. Exit up and dot it after the word.
This sheet starts with large models of capital J and lowercase j, with a green start dot, numbered strokes, and arrows that show which way the pencil travels. Then come two rows for each form: trace, then write from the start dots. Page two joins j into the words "jam" and "jet" and the sentence "Jen can jump rope", so your child practices the capital and the lowercase joins in real writing.
Cursive j is one of the undercurve letters (i, t, u, w, r, s, p, j), which all begin with a scooping stroke up from the baseline. When j feels easy, practice i, t, u, w next, or print the full cursive alphabet chart.
Tips for using it
- A lower loop that turns right makes j look like a q tail. Like g and y, the j loop turns to the left.
- Say the strokes out loud while writing j, for example: "scoop up, slide down, swing away". Saying it keeps the shape consistent from row to row.

Questions
How do you write a capital J in cursive?
Capital J starts on the baseline, swings up to the top line, loops to the left, then comes all the way down below the baseline into a lower loop that crosses at the baseline and exits. The model at the top of the sheet numbers each stroke, so your child can see where to lift the pencil.
How does cursive j connect to the next letter?
The lower loop crosses at the baseline and leads straight into the next letter, as in 'jam' and 'jet'.
When should kids learn cursive j?
Most programs introduce cursive in 2nd or 3rd grade, once print letters are automatic. Cursive j is taught with the other undercurve letters (i, t, u, w, r, s, p, j), so it often comes early, because undercurve letters are the simplest.
