How to write a lowercase m in cursive: From the baseline, roll an overcurve hump up to the midline and down. Make a second hump and a third, each landing on the baseline, and finish the last one with an exit stroke.
This sheet starts with large models of capital M and lowercase m, with a green start dot, numbered strokes, and arrows that show which way the pencil travels. Then come two rows for each form: trace, then write from the start dots. Page two joins m into the words "moon" and "map" and the sentence "Mom makes muffins", so your child practices the capital and the lowercase joins in real writing.
Cursive m is one of the overcurve letters (n, m, v, x, y, z), which begin with a hump that rolls up and over to the right. When m feels easy, practice n, v, x, y next, or print the full cursive alphabet chart.
Tips for using it
- Counting humps is the classic problem: lowercase m has three downstrokes and n has two. Say 'over, down, over, down, over, down' while you write.
- Say the strokes out loud while writing m, for example: "roll over, pull down, swing away". Saying it keeps the shape consistent from row to row.

Questions
How do you write a capital M in cursive?
Capital M starts at the top line with a small cap curve, pulls down to the baseline, then goes back up over a hump and down, and over a second hump down to the baseline before it exits. The model at the top of the sheet numbers each stroke, so your child can see where to lift the pencil.
How does cursive m connect to the next letter?
Because m starts with an overcurve, the letter before it ends by rolling up and over into the first hump.
When should kids learn cursive m?
Most programs introduce cursive in 2nd or 3rd grade, once print letters are automatic. Cursive m is taught with the other overcurve letters (n, m, v, x, y, z), so it often comes later, after the undercurve and oval letters.
