How to write a lowercase l in cursive: Undercurve from the baseline up to the top line, loop to the left, pull straight down to the baseline, and exit.

This sheet starts with large models of capital L and lowercase l, with a green start dot, numbered strokes, and arrows that show which way the pencil travels. Then come two rows for each form: trace, then write from the start dots. Page two joins l into the words "leaf" and "lamp" and the sentence "Leo likes lemons", so your child practices the capital and the lowercase joins in real writing.

Cursive l is one of the loop letters (e, l, h, k, b, f), which begin with an undercurve and loop back at the top. When l feels easy, practice e, h, k, b next, or print the full cursive alphabet chart.

Tips for using it

  • A loop that only reaches the midline is an e, and a loop squeezed shut looks like a t. Reach the top line and leave the loop open.
  • Say the strokes out loud while writing l, for example: "scoop up, loop back, pull down". Saying it keeps the shape consistent from row to row.

Questions

How do you write a capital L in cursive?

Capital L starts just above the midline, curves up into a loop at the top line, comes down to the baseline, makes a small loop that lies on the baseline, and exits along the bottom. The model at the top of the sheet numbers each stroke, so your child can see where to lift the pencil.

How does cursive l connect to the next letter?

Lowercase l starts and ends on the baseline, so double letters like 'll' in 'bell' are just two loops in a row.

When should kids learn cursive l?

Most programs introduce cursive in 2nd or 3rd grade, once print letters are automatic. Cursive l is taught with the other loop letters (e, l, h, k, b, f), so it often comes right after the undercurve letters.
