How to write a lowercase s in cursive: Undercurve up to the midline to a point. Curve back down and around to the baseline, closing the bottom against the upstroke, and exit up to the right.
This sheet starts with large models of capital S and lowercase s, with a green start dot, numbered strokes, and arrows that show which way the pencil travels. Then come two rows for each form: trace, then write from the start dots. Page two joins s into the words "sun" and "sock" and the sentence "Sam sees the sun", so your child practices the capital and the lowercase joins in real writing.
Cursive s is one of the undercurve letters (i, t, u, w, r, s, p, j), which all begin with a scooping stroke up from the baseline. When s feels easy, practice i, t, u, w next, or print the full cursive alphabet chart.
Tips for using it
- Leaving the bottom open makes s look like an r or a hook. Bring the curve back to touch the upstroke before you exit.
- The bottom of s closes on the baseline and flows into the next letter, as in 'sun' and 'sock'.

Questions
How do you write a capital S in cursive?
Capital S starts on the baseline with a long upstroke to the top line, loops, curves down to the baseline, and finishes with a small curve back into the letter near the midline. The model at the top of the sheet numbers each stroke, so your child can see where to lift the pencil.
Why does cursive s look so different?
Cursive s looks nothing like print s, which is why 'cursive s' is one of the most searched handwriting questions.
When should kids learn cursive s?
Most programs introduce cursive in 2nd or 3rd grade, once print letters are automatic. Cursive s is taught with the other undercurve letters (i, t, u, w, r, s, p, j), so it often comes early, because undercurve letters are the simplest.
