How to write a lowercase r in cursive: Undercurve up just past the midline to a small point (the shoulder), drop a short line down and slightly right, then curve down to the baseline and exit.
This sheet starts with large models of capital R and lowercase r, with a green start dot, numbered strokes, and arrows that show which way the pencil travels. Then come two rows for each form: trace, then write from the start dots. Page two joins r into the words "rain" and "red" and the sentence "Rex runs fast", so your child practices the capital and the lowercase joins in real writing.
Cursive r is one of the undercurve letters (i, t, u, w, r, s, p, j), which all begin with a scooping stroke up from the baseline. When r feels easy, practice i, t, u, w next, or print the full cursive alphabet chart.
Tips for using it
- Without the little shoulder, r looks like an i with no dot or a v. Make a clear point at the top before you drop down.
- Say the strokes out loud while writing r, for example: "scoop up, slide down, swing away". Saying it keeps the shape consistent from row to row.

Questions
How do you write a capital R in cursive?
Capital R starts like P: an upward curve to the top line, a slanted stem down, a retrace, and a bump. Then make a small loop at the stem and kick the leg out to the baseline. The model at the top of the sheet numbers each stroke, so your child can see where to lift the pencil.
How does cursive r connect to the next letter?
Because r starts with an undercurve, it joins from the baseline after most letters, as in 'rug' and 'red'.
When should kids learn cursive r?
Most programs introduce cursive in 2nd or 3rd grade, once print letters are automatic. Cursive r is taught with the other undercurve letters (i, t, u, w, r, s, p, j), so it often comes early, because undercurve letters are the simplest.
