Halloween writing prompts for each grade band, printed one per page with writing lines. Kindergarten and 1st grade write about a favorite costume, a pumpkin that can talk, or whether they'd rather be a friendly ghost or a silly monster. 2nd and 3rd grade write a story about a jack-o'-lantern who is afraid of the dark, describe their best costume ever, or argue for trick-or-treating versus a costume party. 4th and 5th graders write a mystery about flickering lights, take a position on school costumes, or reflect on a time they faced a fear.

The prompts are fun without being frightening. This set shows the three 2nd–3rd grade prompts; choose another grade above. Make a Halloween learning day with the Halloween reading passages, a Halloween word search and the full Halloween worksheet pack.

Tips for using it

  • Brainstorm Halloween words on a sticky note before writing.
  • Turn on the graphic organizer for the story prompt.
  • Let kids illustrate their story and hang it up for Halloween.

Questions

Are these Halloween prompts scary?

No. They're playful: costumes, talking pumpkins, a jack-o'-lantern afraid of the dark. The 4th–5th grade mystery prompt is suspenseful but not gory.

Can I print Halloween prompts for different ages at once?

Yes. Print one set, change the grade and print again. Each grade band has its own three prompts.
