Reading Eggs vs Hooked on Phonics: the short answer
Both programs teach young children to read with short, app-led phonics lessons. They differ in range, price and how much paper comes with them.
Hooked on Phonics is a focused learn-to-decode program for about ages 3 to 8. The app teaches, and a monthly box of workbooks and decodable storybooks gives your child something to hold. It stops around a 2nd-grade reading level.
Reading Eggs is a bigger library. One subscription includes five programs, from Reading Eggs Junior for toddlers to Reading Eggspress for comprehension up to about age 13, plus Mathseeds for early math. It costs much less per year and covers up to four kids.
Teaching approach
Hooked on Phonics moves in strict steps. Each step has three short lessons, and a new decodable storybook follows each lesson, so kids read words they've just learned. Spelling and early math are in the same app. It focuses on decoding, with little grammar, writing or comprehension.
Reading Eggs starts with a short placement quiz with spoken directions. Kids then move across a lesson map that mixes animations, songs, games and a book. Golden eggs buy avatar rewards. It covers phonics and sight words early, then shifts to comprehension, vocabulary, spelling and grammar in Eggspress. Fast Phonics offers a quicker review for ages 5 to 10 who need to catch up.
What a lesson looks like
Hooked on Phonics: A kindergartner watches a short video and sings a song about a new sound, plays two or three games with that sound, reads a short story in the app or from the mailed books, then does a workbook page and adds a sticker. It's done in 20 minutes or less. A parent supervises and listens to the reading.
Reading Eggs: Your child logs in, finishes one lesson in about 15 minutes, then reads an ebook from the 4,000-plus library or prints a matching worksheet. After the first few sessions, most kids work alone, and you check the dashboard.
Price and value
As of October 2026, Hooked on Phonics website plans cost $23.96 to $31.99 a month for up to three learners, with a mailed practice pack each month. Extra practice packs for more learners are $9.99 a month each. App-only access is $14.99 a month, $69.99 for 6 months or $129.99 for 12. There's no standard trial, but plans carry a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Reading Eggs costs $13.99 a month or $99.99 a year for up to four children after a 30-day free trial. Homeschool Max, with lesson assigning and reports, is $41.90 a month or $299 a year.
Over a year, Reading Eggs' standard plan is roughly a third of Hooked on Phonics' website plans. What you pay extra for with Hooked on Phonics is the paper: workbooks and storybooks your child can read away from the screen.

Can you use a scholarship for either?
Possibly. Blake eLearning says Reading Eggs is set up as a vendor for programs including the Arizona ESA, Utah Fits All, the Georgia Promise Scholarship, New Hampshire EFA, Arkansas EFA and Step Up For Students in Florida. Hooked on Phonics publishes an education savings account page for families. Phonics curriculum is commonly allowable, but some programs only pay approved vendors, and each program decides. Questions
Is Reading Eggs or Hooked on Phonics better for a 3-year-old?
Reading Eggs Junior is built for ages 2 to 4 and focuses on letters, songs and pre-reading. Hooked on Phonics has a pre-reader section for about ages 3 to 5. For most 3-year-olds, short sessions of either are plenty, and read-alouds still matter more than any app.
Which works better for kindergarten?
Both teach kindergarten phonics well. Hooked on Phonics gives a tighter decoding sequence with a new storybook after each lesson. Reading Eggs mixes phonics with sight words and lots of ebooks, and it keeps going after your child can decode.
Do I need both?
Usually not. Families sometimes pair Hooked on Phonics workbooks with the Reading Eggs library for extra reading practice, but that doubles the cost. Start one, use the trial or guarantee, and switch if it doesn't stick.
Is either one good for dyslexia?
Neither is a structured literacy intervention. Kids with dyslexia usually need explicit, multisensory, one-on-one teaching, such as All About Reading or an Orton-Gillingham tutor. The apps can be extra practice alongside that.
Which one is cheaper over a year?
Reading Eggs at $99.99 a year for up to four kids is far cheaper than Hooked on Phonics website plans, which run about $288 to $384 over 12 months. Hooked on Phonics' app-only plan, at $129.99 a year, is closer but drops the mailed books.
