Reading Eggs vs Teach Your Monster to Read: the short answer

Both are game-style phonics programs that young kids can use on their own. One is a paid, multi-year program; the other is a free game focused on the first steps of reading.

Teach Your Monster to Read comes from a subsidiary of the Usborne Foundation charity. Kids build a monster and teach it to read across three games covering roughly the first two years of reading. It's free on computers and $8.99 once on phones and tablets.

Reading Eggs is a subscription with five programs, from toddler pre-reading to comprehension for ages 7–13, plus Mathseeds math and more than 4,000 ebooks. It costs $99.99 a year for up to four kids.

For preschool through 1st grade on a budget, Teach Your Monster to Read is a great start. For a program that grows with several kids, Reading Eggs goes much further.

Teaching approach

Teach Your Monster to Read moves through three games. First Steps covers the first 31 letter-sound pairs, blending and segmenting simple words, and six tricky words. Fun with Words adds 18 more letter-sound pairs, consonant blends, 30 more tricky words and sentences. Champion Reader covers alternative spellings and reading short books for meaning.

Reading Eggs starts with a placement quiz, then moves kids across a lesson map mixing animations, songs, games and a book. After decoding, Reading Eggspress shifts to comprehension, vocabulary, spelling and grammar. Fast Phonics offers quick catch-up for ages 5–10. It gives limited feedback when kids get answers wrong.

What a lesson looks like

Teach Your Monster to Read: Your kindergartner opens the game, plays a few mini-games on a new letter sound, blends and reads short words with it, then spends rewards dressing up their monster. Ten to twenty minutes is enough.

Reading Eggs: Your child logs in, finishes one lesson in about 15 minutes, then reads an ebook or prints a matching worksheet. You check the parent dashboard to see progress.

Questions

Is Teach Your Monster to Read really free?

Yes, on computers. The full game is free to play through the website. The iOS and Android app costs $8.99 once in the US, with no subscription, ads or in-app purchases. It's run by a subsidiary of the Usborne Foundation charity.

Does Teach Your Monster to Read use British pronunciation?

Some sounds use UK pronunciations that differ from American speech, and the game doesn't teach letter names alongside sounds. Most American families pair it with read-alouds and a short phonics routine to cover those gaps.

Can my child outgrow Teach Your Monster to Read quickly?

It ends around the end of 1st grade. Kids can also move ahead without fully mastering earlier sounds, so use Practice Mode to review weak spots. Reading Eggs keeps going into comprehension and grammar through about age 13.

Should I use both?

It's a common pattern: start with the free game, then add Reading Eggs during the 30-day free trial to see whether your child wants more. Using both daily is usually more screen time than a young child needs.

Which is better for a 4-year-old?

Both work. Teach Your Monster's First Steps game covers the first 31 letter-sound pairs and simple blending. Reading Eggs Junior (ages 2–4) and Reading Eggs (ages 3–7) cover letters, sounds and early reading with songs and books.
