Kumon vs Sylvan: the short answer

Kumon and Sylvan Learning are both neighborhood learning centers, but a child's week looks very different at each.

Kumon is a practice system. Your child does short worksheets every day at home and visits the center twice a week to work and get graded. Instructors guide, but they don't lecture. Sylvan is a teaching service. Certified teachers work with a few students at a time for about an hour, two to four times a week, on plans built from a free assessment.

Kumon is cheaper and builds fluency. Sylvan costs more and teaches, covering writing, study skills and test prep too.

Teaching approach

Kumon starts with a placement test that sets a deliberately easy starting level. From there, kids work through tiny-step worksheets and must reach 100% accuracy before moving on. Math runs from counting to calculus; reading runs from pre-reading to literary analysis. Kumon places by skill, not grade.

Sylvan begins with its free Insight assessment for one subject, then builds a plan to teach to the gaps. Teachers are certified and trained in the Sylvan Method, and they use a rewards system and regular parent check-ins. Beyond reading and math, Sylvan offers writing, study skills, AP support and SAT, ACT, IB and state test prep.

What a lesson looks like

Kumon: twice a week your child turns in homework, completes a new packet at the center, times it, and fixes mistakes until it's perfect. The other five days, about 30 minutes per subject at home, including weekends. Young beginners need a parent beside them.

Sylvan: your child arrives for a one-hour session, sits with a teacher and a few other students each on their own plan, and works on today's skill with direct teaching, practice and feedback. There's little homework. Your role is mostly driving and checking in with the center director.

Price and value

Neither brand publishes national prices. As of October 2026:

  • Kumon: third-party surveys put most US centers at about $130–$220 per subject per month, plus a registration fee often around $50–$80. Math and reading together mean paying twice.
  • Sylvan: two center pricing pages listed $53–$75 a session month-to-month, dropping to $42–$67 on a 12-month membership, plus a $95–$199 registration fee. Adding sessions per week lowers the per-session rate.

At two sessions a week, Sylvan typically costs two to three times as much as one Kumon subject. You're paying for teacher time. Read Sylvan contracts closely, since the best rates require 6- or 12-month commitments.

Who should choose Kumon

  • Kids who need math facts or early reading to become automatic
  • Preschoolers and kindergartners starting out, with a parent to help at home
  • Self-motivated students who want to work ahead of grade level
  • Families who want a lower monthly cost and can keep a daily routine

Who should choose Sylvan

  • Kids who need concepts explained by a teacher, not just more practice
  • Students who struggle with writing, organization or study skills
  • Teens preparing for the SAT, ACT, AP or state tests
  • Families who want almost no homework at home

Alternatives to both

Can you use a scholarship for either?

Possibly. Tutoring is an allowable expense in some education savings account programs, such as Arizona's ESA and Florida's FES-UA, when the provider meets the program's credential and vendor rules; each program decides on every purchase. Sylvan's FAQ says it doesn't offer its own scholarships, so ask your local center whether it's set up as a vendor in your program. Read what ESA funds can buy, save your pick to your wishlist, and apply once to the scholarships in your state.

Questions

Is Kumon or Sylvan better for reading?

It depends on the problem. Kumon Reading builds steady practice from letter sounds to literary analysis through worksheets. Sylvan's teachers work on phonics, fluency, comprehension and essay writing directly, which usually suits a struggling reader or a child who needs writing help.

How much does Sylvan cost per month?

Sylvan doesn't publish national prices. Two center pricing pages checked in October 2026 showed $42–$78 a session depending on commitment, plus $95–$199 registration. At two sessions a week, that's very roughly $350–$650 a month.

Is Sylvan one-on-one?

Not usually. Sylvan works at a low student-to-teacher ratio, typically a teacher with a few students on individual plans. If you need strictly one-on-one, ask the center or consider a private tutor.

Can Kumon help with school homework?

No. Kumon follows its own worksheet sequence and doesn't cover current class topics. Sylvan offers homework help and report-card support as part of its study skills services.

Which is better for SAT or ACT prep?

Sylvan, since it offers SAT, ACT, IB and state test prep. Kumon builds underlying skills but doesn't run test prep courses.
