Sylvan Learning
A national network of locally owned K–12 tutoring centers. Certified teachers run sessions at a low student-to-teacher ratio, in the center or live online, after a free single-subject Insight assessment.
What is Sylvan Learning?
Sylvan Learning is a network of locally owned tutoring centers across the US, with a home office in Bedford, Texas. It is part of Unleashed Brands. Each center is a franchise, so the owner sets prices, hours and some policies, while Sylvan supplies the method, materials and teacher training.
The core idea is simple: assess first, then teach to the gaps. Sylvan's teachers are certified and trained in what the company calls the Sylvan Method.
How it works
- Free Insight assessment. Your child takes a single-subject assessment at no cost. The center uses it to recommend a plan and a weekly schedule.
- Choose a membership. Most centers offer month-to-month, 6-month and 12-month memberships at 2, 3 or 4 sessions a week.
- Attend sessions. Sessions usually run about an hour. Sylvan says most students come 2 to 4 hours a week.
- Track progress. Teachers use a rewards system and regular check-ins with parents.
Sessions happen at a low student-to-teacher ratio. That usually means a teacher with a few students, each working on their own plan, rather than one teacher per child. Many centers also run live online sessions with the same teachers.
Your role as a parent is mostly logistics: driving, keeping the schedule and talking with the center director about progress.

Who it's best for
Sylvan fits kids who do well with a set routine and an adult in the room, especially elementary and middle schoolers who are behind in reading or math. It also suits families who want a single place for tutoring and test prep.
Look elsewhere if you need strict one-on-one teaching, a low budget or an intensive dyslexia program. For one-on-one help at home, see Tutor Doctor or Club Z Tutoring. For specialized reading instruction, see Lindamood-Bell.
Pricing at a glance
There is no national price list. In October 2026, two center pricing pages showed the spread: Anderson, South Carolina charged $53 a session month-to-month and $42 to $48 on a 12-month plan, while San Luis Obispo, California charged $75 month-to-month and $60 to $67 on a 12-month plan. Registration fees were $95 and $199. At 2 sessions a week, that works out to roughly $400 to $650 a month before registration. Find your center's own pricing page before you visit.
Can a scholarship or ESA pay for it?
Sometimes. Tutoring is an allowable expense in several education savings account programs, such as the Arizona ESA, but programs set rules about which providers qualify and how they get paid. Sylvan itself says it does not offer scholarships. Ask your local center whether it accepts your program, then check scholarships by state.
On Edulist you can save Sylvan to your wishlist with no account, then apply once to the scholarship programs that fit your family. Each program decides what it will fund.

A summary of public parent feedback we read on forums, app stores and review sites. It is not a set of Edulist family reviews.
Public feedback is mixed. Parents often praise friendly, patient teachers and steady progress, especially for younger kids. The most common complaints are cost, sessions that are shared rather than one-on-one, hard-to-get refunds and quality that varies from one center to the next.

Common complaints

Sylvan Learning FAQs
How much does Sylvan Learning cost?
Each center sets its own rates. Center pricing pages we checked in October 2026 ranged from about $42 a session on a 12-month plan to $75 month-to-month, plus a one-time registration fee of $95 to $199. Drop-in sessions ran $60 to $78.
Is Sylvan one-on-one tutoring?
Sylvan describes its tutoring as pairing your child with a teacher at a low student-to-teacher ratio. In practice that often means a teacher works with a few students at once. Ask your center for its exact ratio before you sign.
Does Sylvan Learning require a contract?
Most centers offer a month-to-month membership you can cancel anytime. Lower rates come with 6- or 12-month minimums. Get the cancellation terms in writing, because they are set locally.
What ages and grades does Sylvan serve?
Sylvan builds its plans on a K–12 learning progression, so it serves kindergarten through 12th grade. Its test prep also covers adult exams like the GED and ASVAB.
Does Sylvan help with dyslexia?
Sylvan says its teachers have experience supporting learning differences and adapt to how each child learns. It is not a dedicated dyslexia program like Lindamood-Bell or Barton, so families with a diagnosis may want a specialist.
Is Sylvan or Kumon better?
Sylvan uses certified teachers and a plan built from an assessment, with in-center sessions. Kumon relies on daily worksheets done mostly at home. Our Kumon vs Sylvan comparison walks through cost, format and fit.
Can I use an ESA or scholarship for Sylvan?
Possibly. Tutoring is allowed in some ESA programs, but each program decides which providers qualify. Ask the center whether it accepts your program, and check your state's scholarship page on Edulist.
