Acton Academy
A network of more than 300 independently owned, learner-driven microschools for ages 4–18. Learners set goals, work through self-paced core skills and hands-on quests, and adults act as Socratic guides rather than lecturers. Tuition and details are set by each campus.
What is Acton Academy?
Acton Academy is a network of small, learner-driven schools. Laura and Jeff Sandefer started the first campus in Austin, Texas in 2009, and the network now lists more than 300 campuses in 42 U.S. states and 30 countries. Each campus is owned and run by local parent entrepreneurs who follow Acton's shared design.
The big idea: children own their learning. They set goals, track progress and hold each other accountable. Adults are called guides, and they ask questions instead of giving answers.
How it works
A typical day mixes three kinds of work:
- Core skills. Learners work at their own pace in reading, writing and math, often with adaptive software. Acton says learners average about 1–1.5 hours of tech a day, and the youngest studios use little or none.
- Socratic discussions. Guides lead group discussions built around hard questions and real dilemmas.
- Quests. Multi-week projects in science, entrepreneurship and the arts, ending in public exhibitions.
Kids are grouped in mixed-age studios. Progress shows up in badges, portfolios and exhibitions rather than grades. Campuses we checked run full school days (Cy-Fair runs 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.), and many follow six-week sessions with breaks.
Parents don't teach, but Acton expects them to step back and let kids struggle a bit. That hands-off stance is a feature to some families and a dealbreaker to others.
What it covers
| Studio | Typical ages | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Spark | 4–7 | Play, early literacy and numeracy, little tech |
| Elementary | 7–11 | Core skills, quests, Socratic discussion |
| Middle School | 11–14 | Deeper quests, leadership, self-governance |
| Launchpad | 14–18 | Apprenticeships, real work, college or career prep |
Some campuses add standardized testing; Cy-Fair, for example, uses MAP Growth each fall and spring, and parents can opt out.
Who it's best for
Acton suits curious, self-driven kids and parents who believe in independence and character building. Look elsewhere if your child needs direct teaching, has significant learning differences, or if you want grades and homework. For background on the model, read our guide to microschools.
Pricing at a glance
There is no network-wide price. Published campus examples include $11,500 for 2026–27 at Acton Academy Cy-Fair (Texas) and $14,500 a year at Acton Academy North Broward (Florida), plus registration or enrollment fees. Some campuses offer sibling discounts or aid.
Can a scholarship or ESA pay for it?
It depends on the campus and state. Acton Academy North Broward says it accepts Florida's PEP and FES-UA scholarships, but not FTC. In states with ESAs or private school scholarships, ask your campus whether it is a registered provider. See the Florida scholarship guide, Texas or Arizona, or browse all state programs. How it compares
- Alpha School is also a private microschool model with short academic blocks, but uses much more software and charges higher tuition.
- Prenda supports small K–8 microschools run by local guides, usually as a homeschool option funded by ESAs.
- Primer runs teacher-led K–8 microschools in Florida, Arizona, Alabama and Texas with income-based tuition.
- Sora Schools brings a similar student-driven, project-based approach online for middle and high school.
