Sora Schools

An independent, tuition-funded online middle and high school headquartered in Atlanta. Students learn through live, interest-driven project units called expeditions, run in 12-week cycles, and earn credit by showing mastery instead of getting traditional grades.

What is Sora Schools?

Sora Schools is an independent online middle and high school, with its administrative office in Atlanta, Georgia. It's funded by tuition rather than public money. Sora's stated goal is to help students make better choices about what comes next, whether that's college, a job or research.

The core idea: start with what a student is curious about, then build real skills through projects, discussion and mentorships.

How it works

The school year runs in 12-week learning cycles. In each cycle, students enroll in about four expeditions: live, interdisciplinary project units led by subject experts. A typical load is a STEM expedition, a math expedition, a humanities expedition and a world language or elective.

A normal day looks like this:

  • Expeditions meet live in blocks from 9:00 a.m. to 4:20 p.m. Eastern.
  • Houses, small advisor-led peer groups, meet every weekday at noon Eastern.
  • Wednesdays are for clubs, events and community, with no expeditions.
  • Thursdays include office hours with STEM and humanities experts.

Each cycle ends with a final project, where students show mastery. Students who prefer a mostly asynchronous path must still join at least one live expedition per cycle plus house meetings. Parents don't teach, but they sign a parent pledge and help teens manage their schedule.
