Alpha School
A network of private PreK–12 campuses that teach core academics in about two hours a day with adaptive software, then spend the rest of the school day on life skills and projects with adult guides. Tuition ranges from $10,000 to $75,000 a year by campus.
What is Alpha School?
Alpha School is a network of private schools founded in Austin, Texas, in 2014 by MacKenzie Price and Brian Holtz. Its model, called 2 Hour Learning, puts core academics into about two hours a day of adaptive software. The rest of a full school day goes to life skills, projects and workshops. Alpha calls its adults guides rather than teachers.
Alpha sits on Edulist's online school list because so much of its academic day runs on software, and because it ran an online program, Alpha Anywhere. As of October 2026, though, Alpha Anywhere enrollment is paused through the end of the year, so Alpha is in practice an in-person school.
How it works
Mornings are for academics. Students work in adaptive, mastery-based apps for core subjects and must hit 90% mastery on a concept before moving on. There is no grade-level cap, so a fast student can work well ahead. Students are grouped by ability, not traditional grades.
Afternoons are for workshops in leadership, public speaking, entrepreneurship, teamwork and similar skills. Guides coach and motivate rather than lecture. Alpha High freshmen in Austin start with an eight-week bootcamp of challenges.

Who it's best for
Alpha fits motivated kids who are bored by the pace of a regular classroom and families who can pay high private school tuition. It also appeals to parents who want entrepreneurship and public speaking built into the day. It is a poor fit if you want a teacher-led classroom, limits on screen time, or an affordable option.
Be clear-eyed about the evidence. Alpha says its students score in the top 1 to 2% on MAP Growth tests, but those claims come from its own analysis and have not been independently reviewed. Wikipedia and news coverage also note criticism of the network's links to for-profit vendors run by the same founders.
Pricing at a glance
For 2026–27, tuition runs from $10,000 a year in Brownsville to $75,000 in San Francisco and Palo Alto. Austin and several other Texas, Arizona and Oklahoma campuses are $40,000, and most others fall between $45,000 and $65,000. The Alpha School pricing page lists campuses by price.
Can a scholarship or ESA pay for it?
Alpha is a private school, so where a campus qualifies, state programs may help. Texas's new ESA briefly excluded Cognia-only schools like Alpha before reinstating most of them, which shows how program rules can shift. See our Texas scholarships page, Florida scholarships page and Arizona ESA guide, and remember each program decides. Even a full ESA award covers only part of most Alpha campuses' tuition. How it compares
Alpha grew out of the Acton Academy microschool model, which offers learner-driven schooling in many cities. Primer and Prenda also run small microschools.
