Official SAT Prep on Khan Academy

Free

Free digital SAT prep from the nonprofit Khan Academy, built in partnership with College Board. Self-paced lessons and practice in Reading and Writing and Math, from Foundations up to a Challenge level.

What is Official SAT Prep on Khan Academy?

Official SAT Prep on Khan Academy is free digital SAT preparation from Khan Academy, the nonprofit learning site. It is built in partnership with College Board, which makes the SAT. As of October 2026, College Board's own SAT practice page calls it Official SAT Prep on Khan Academy and points students to it for free lessons and quizzes.

The idea is simple: practice the exact skills the SAT tests, at your own pace, with explanations for every question, and pay nothing.

How it works

Students sign in to a free Khan Academy account and open the SAT course. It is split into Reading and Writing and Math. Each part moves through levels: Foundations, Medium, Advanced and, since August 2026, a Challenge unit for the hardest Reading and Writing questions.

Students practice in short exercises, get explanations for mistakes and build mastery skill by skill. Khan Academy describes the course as about 20 hours of work.

A smart weekly routine looks like this:

  1. Take a full practice test in College Board's free Bluebook app to get a baseline.
  2. Work the weakest skills on Khan Academy for 30 to 60 minutes, a few times a week.
  3. Retake a Bluebook practice test every few weeks to check progress.

Parents don't need to teach anything. Your role is to help set a schedule and check in.

Who it's best for

It's best for self-motivated high schoolers who will stick to a plan, and for any family that wants strong prep at no cost. It's also a good way for 9th and 10th graders to build skills early, before the PSAT.

Students who need a teacher, a deadline or someone checking their work often do better with a class or tutor. See Princeton Review, PrepScholar or Kaplan.

Pricing at a glance

It's free. Khan Academy sells a district version to schools, at $10 per student for districts using the full SAT Suite in 2026–27, but families never pay. Khanmigo, the optional AI tutor, is a separate subscription; see Khanmigo.

Can a scholarship or ESA pay for it?

There's nothing to pay for. If you decide to add a paid course or tutor, test prep may be an allowable expense in some education savings account programs, such as the Arizona ESA. Each program decides. See scholarships by state.

You can save SAT prep options to your wishlist on Edulist and apply once to the programs that fit.
