Khanmigo
Khanmigo is Khan Academy's AI tutor and teaching assistant. It guides students through problems with questions instead of giving answers, works inside Khan Academy's lessons, and costs $4 a month for families; it's free for teachers.
What is Khanmigo?
Khanmigo is an AI-powered tutor and teaching assistant from Khan Academy, the education nonprofit. It runs inside Khan Academy, so a student working on a fraction exercise or watching a biology video can ask Khanmigo for help on that exact item. Kids can also type or say any homework question.
The big idea is that Khanmigo doesn't give answers. Like a patient tutor, it asks questions and nudges students toward solving problems themselves.
How it works
- A parent subscribes. You must be 18 or older with a US billing address. One subscription lets you add up to 10 children under 18.
- Kids ask for help. On any Khan Academy exercise, video or article, or with their own homework, kids chat by typing or talking. Khanmigo can read its replies aloud.
- Khanmigo guides. It asks what the student already knows, points out where thinking went wrong, and offers hints.
- Parents oversee. The parent dashboard shows chat history, sends alerts for flagged content, and offers 20+ tools, such as a quiz generator and lesson plan builder.
Teachers get a separate free version with tools for lesson plans, rubrics, exit tickets and summaries of student work.
What it covers
| Area | What Khanmigo does |
|---|---|
| Math and science | Step-by-step guidance on Khan Academy practice and homework problems |
| Writing | Writing coach with prompts and feedback, plus debate practice |
| Humanities | Discussion of history, literature and social studies topics |
| Coding | Feedback on JavaScript, HTML, Python and SQL |
| College prep | Coaching on college admissions |
Who it's best for
Khanmigo fits kids who already use Khan Academy, homeschool families with curious "why" askers, and parents who want AI help with real oversight. At $4 a month, it's an inexpensive companion to a curriculum or a human tutor.
It's not a substitute for a person. Kids who need accountability or a relationship do better with a live tutor such as Thinkster Math or Varsity Tutors. For free practice without the AI, use Khan Academy. Browse online math and tutoring.
Pricing at a glance
As of October 2026, Khanmigo is $4 a month or $44 a year for families, covering up to 10 kids. It's free for teachers. Khan Academy's lessons stay free without it.
Can a scholarship or ESA pay for it?
Possibly. Some programs, such as Arizona ESA, allow curriculum and online learning programs, and each program decides on every purchase. At this price, many families simply pay out of pocket. Learn what ESA funds can buy, then save Khanmigo to your wishlist and apply once to the scholarships that fit your family.

Independent reviewers rate Khanmigo well for safety and design. Common Sense Media's AI risk assessment rated it low risk overall and praised its narrow, education-focused design and transparency, while warning that, like any chatbot, it can be inaccurate and that users may trust it too readily because of the Khan Academy name.
Common praise
- Responsibly designed with clear guardrails
- Keeps conversations focused on learning activities
- Transparent about how it was built and tested
Common complaints
- Can produce inaccurate information like other chatbots
- Trusted brand may lead kids to skip double-checking
