Synthesis Tutor
An AI-guided math tutor for ages 5–11 that teaches K–5 math through interactive, multisensory lessons with a warm on-screen voice. One plan covers up to 7 kids for $29 a month or $119 a year, after a 7-day free trial.
What is Synthesis Tutor?
Synthesis Tutor is an AI-guided math tutor for kids ages 5 to 11. It comes from Synthesis School, Inc., which grew out of an experimental school started at SpaceX in 2014. The tutor talks a child through each problem in a warm voice, asks questions instead of giving answers and adjusts when a child gets stuck.
Synthesis is clear that it's not a general chatbot. Its educators design the lessons, and AI is used where it helps.
How it works
Your child opens the app on a tablet or computer and starts a lesson. The tutor introduces an idea with hands-on, on-screen activities, like dragging blocks or splitting shapes. Then it checks understanding with small "micro-assessments" built into every lesson. Your child moves on only after showing they've got it.
There's no formal placement test. The tutor finds your child's level over the first few sessions. Kids under 7 hear all text read aloud automatically, and voice speed can be adjusted. Sessions often run 15 to 30 minutes, and parents mostly read the progress reports.
What it covers
| Area | Examples |
|---|---|
| Number sense | Counting and cardinality, place value |
| Operations | Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division |
| Fractions | Comparing, equivalent fractions, operations |
| Algebraic thinking | Patterns, unknowns, early equations |
Synthesis says it covers the standard K–5 math curriculum and goes further. It's also available in Spanish.
Who it's best for
Synthesis Tutor shines with kids who dread math, need patient explanations or struggle with reading-heavy apps. It's also a smart buy for big families, since one plan covers up to 7 kids. Advanced kids may finish quickly and do better with Beast Academy. Older students should look at Math Academy or Khan Academy.
Pricing at a glance
As of October 2026, Synthesis lists $29 a month or $119 a year for up to 7 kids, plus one-child plans at $35 a month or $300 a year. A 7-day free trial comes first. Prices change often, so confirm before you pay.
Can a scholarship or ESA pay for it?
Some programs reimburse educational software like Synthesis Tutor. Florida's PEP handbook lists instructional materials, for example, but each program decides. If your program reimburses per student, ask how it handles a family plan. Start at our scholarships hub, then check your state, such as Arizona or Florida.
