Logic of English
A rules-based reading, spelling and grammar curriculum with two lines: Foundations (levels A–D, ages 4–7) for beginning readers and Essentials (30 units, ages 8 and up) for older and striving readers.
What is Logic of English?
Logic of English is a reading, spelling and grammar curriculum created by Denise Eide. It rests on one claim: English spelling is far more logical than most people think, once you know the phonograms and rules. Students learn to decode and spell every word, so the program skips memorized sight words.
There are two main lines. Foundations teaches young children to read. Essentials teaches the same system to older students who need a stronger base.
How it works
The parent teaches every lesson from a teacher's manual. Lessons mix short direct teaching with games, writing and reading. A typical Foundations lesson:
- Review phonograms with flash cards or a game.
- Learn a new sound or spelling rule.
- Practice writing the new phonogram, using the built-in handwriting method.
- Blend and spell words on the whiteboard or in the workbook.
- Read from a controlled reader.
Essentials units have five parts: concepts, building words, words in context (grammar), words in action (vocabulary and reading) and a check-your-understanding assessment. Review options follow Parts 2, 3 and 4.
What it covers
| Line | Ages | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Foundations A–D | 4–7 | Phonemic awareness, all 75 basic phonograms, spelling rules, handwriting, early grammar; 40 lessons per level |
| Essentials (4 volumes) | 8 and up | 30 units of phonics, spelling analysis, grammar and vocabulary, at three difficulty levels |
Levels are based on skill, not grade. A 7-year-old who already reads may skip Foundations A, and a struggling 10-year-old belongs in Essentials.
Who it's best for
Logic of English fits parents who want to understand English themselves and enjoy teaching it. It is a good match for curious kids who ask why, and for older students who have not clicked with other methods. Families who want reading, spelling and handwriting in one plan get a lot here.
Look elsewhere if you need short, open-and-go lessons, or something your child can do alone. Explode the Code workbooks or an app like Reading.com ask less of the parent.
Pricing at a glance
Logic of English is a one-time purchase. As of October 2026, a level bundle costs about $78–$115, and the reusable Core Materials Set is $138.51. A first-year starter bundle with core materials runs $222–$227. Printed items bought direct can be returned within 90 days. See Logic of English pricing for the full breakdown.
Can a scholarship or ESA pay for it?
Often it may. Arizona's ESA law lists curricula and supplementary materials as allowed uses, and many other ESA and scholarship programs treat curriculum the same way. Rules and vendor lists differ, so check Arizona, Florida or your own state. Save Logic of English to your wishlist and apply once on Edulist.
