Wyzant

Wyzant is a tutoring marketplace where you search tutor profiles, compare hourly rates and reviews, message tutors, and book private lessons online or in person. Tutors set their own rates, and you pay only after each lesson.

What is Wyzant?

Wyzant is an online marketplace for private tutors, founded in 2005 and now a division of IXL Learning. Instead of assigning you a tutor, Wyzant lets you search, compare and choose. Every profile shows the tutor's hourly rate, background, reviews and background-check status.

It covers far more than school subjects. You'll find tutors for algebra and chemistry, SAT prep, reading, Spanish, piano and coding.

How it works

  1. Search. Enter a subject and your ZIP code, or filter for online tutors. Compare rates, reviews and credentials.
  2. Message. Wyzant suggests contacting three or more tutors to compare teaching style and personality before booking.
  3. Book. Schedule a lesson online or in person. Online lessons use Wyzant's own lesson space.
  4. Pay after. You're charged only after a lesson takes place. If you don't love the first lesson, the Good Fit Guarantee covers that hour.

Parents of younger kids should handle the screening, messaging and scheduling, and check each tutor's cancellation policy.

Who it's best for

Wyzant suits families who want control: you pick the person, see the price, and pay per lesson without a contract. It's especially handy for in-person tutoring nearby or niche subjects.

If you'd rather have a company match and manage the tutor, look at Varsity Tutors. For language or kids' tutoring at lower rates, compare Preply. For live small-group classes, see Outschool. Browse all tutoring.

Pricing at a glance

There are no plans. Each tutor sets a rate. As of October 2026, sample tutors on Wyzant's how-it-works page list $30–$50 an hour; specialists may charge more. Check the checkout screen for any fees, and read each tutor's cancellation rules.

Can a scholarship or ESA pay for it?

Possibly, but it depends on the tutor. Arizona ESA allows tutoring from individuals who meet its credential rule, and Florida's FES-UA requires part-time tutors to hold specific credentials and register with the program. Read what ESA funds can buy, then save Wyzant to your wishlist and apply once to the scholarships that fit your family.

Wyzant FAQs

How much does Wyzant cost?

Each tutor sets their own hourly rate, shown on their profile. As of October 2026, sample tutors on Wyzant's how-it-works page list $30–$50 an hour, and specialized or highly experienced tutors may charge more. You pay only after each lesson.

Are Wyzant reviews trustworthy?

Reviews on tutor profiles come from students who booked lessons, which makes them useful for comparing tutors. Wyzant's company rating on Trustpilot is low, driven largely by tutor complaints and support issues. Read both kinds before you choose.

Is there a Wyzant coupon code?

Wyzant doesn't advertise public coupon codes. Its official offer is the Good Fit Guarantee, which covers your first hour if the tutor isn't a fit. Some tutors offer package rates if you ask.

Can homeschoolers use Wyzant?

Yes. Homeschool families use Wyzant for subjects they prefer not to teach, such as upper-level math, chemistry, languages or music. Look for tutors who list homeschool experience on their profiles.

Does Wyzant background check tutors?

Profiles show whether a tutor has a background check on file, and you can request one if it isn't listed. Check this before booking a tutor for a child.

Can I use ESA funds for a Wyzant tutor?

Possibly. Programs such as Arizona ESA set credential rules for individual tutors and may require tutors to register with the program's payment platform. Save Wyzant to your Edulist wishlist and check scholarships for your state.
