Private School Tuition Assistance: Scholarships, Tax Breaks and What's Actually Deductible
Updated · By Edulist · 11 sources
Is private school tuition tax deductible?
No, not on your federal return. There is no federal deduction or credit for K–12 private school tuition. IRS Publication 526 is explicit: tuition is not a charitable contribution, even at a religious school, and neither is a required "donation" a school charges instead of tuition. The child and dependent care credit doesn't cover kindergarten and up, either.
Three federal exceptions are worth knowing:
- 529 plans. Since 2018, 529 withdrawals can pay K–12 tuition tax free. The 2025 federal law raised the yearly limit from $10,000 to $20,000 per student starting in 2026 and added curriculum, books, online materials, tutoring, tests, dual enrollment and therapies for students with disabilities. Whether your state also gives a state tax break for K–12 529 withdrawals varies.
- Coverdell education savings accounts. You can contribute up to $2,000 a year per child, and tax-free withdrawals can pay K–12 tuition, tutoring, books, supplies and computer equipment.
- Special education as a medical expense. IRS Publication 502 lets you count tuition at a school whose main purpose is helping a child overcome learning disabilities.

State tax credits for private school tuition
A few states give parents a tax credit for tuition they pay:
- Oklahoma: the Parental Choice Tax Credit is a refundable $5,000 to $7,500 per child, scaled by income, with a $250 million cap for tax year 2026.
- Iowa: the tuition and textbook credit is 25% of the first $2,000 per child, up to $500. You can't claim it for tuition paid with Iowa ESA funds.
- Idaho: the refundable Parental Choice Tax Credit covers private school, microschool and learning pod tuition, tutoring and testing, from a $50 million yearly fund.
Most other states help through vouchers, ESAs or tax-credit scholarships instead. Your state's page on Edulist lists every program.
The federal tax credit for private school starting 2027
Families don't get the federal scholarship tax credit; donors do. From January 1, 2027, a donor can claim up to $1,700 for giving to a scholarship granting organization in a state that opted in. Those SGOs then award scholarships to students in households earning up to 300% of area median income. Under Treasury's proposed rules, tuition must be paid directly to the school. If you'd like to encourage relatives to give, point them to our federal scholarship tax credit guide, but remember donors can't earmark gifts for your child.
How to stack tuition help
- Apply for school aid and state programs at the same time. Many schools factor state awards into their aid offers.
- Check combination rules. Arizona's ESA can't be combined with its tax-credit scholarships; Indiana's special-needs ESA can be combined with its tax-credit scholarship.
- Use a 529 for the gap. Withdraw only for costs not already paid by a scholarship.
- Keep records. States won't give a tax credit for costs an ESA or scholarship already covered.
Consider online private schools too
Accredited online private schools such as Bridgeway Academy, Laurel Springs and Stanford Online High School can cost less than a local campus, and ESAs in states like Texas and Florida often cover approved online programs. Compare options on online schools, save favorites to your wishlist, and Edulist helps you apply once to the programs that can pay.

Questions
Can I deduct private school tuition as a charitable donation?
No. IRS Publication 526 says you can't deduct tuition as a charitable contribution, even at a parochial school, and you can't deduct a required payment labeled a donation. A truly voluntary gift beyond tuition may be deductible if you get nothing in return.
Can I use the child and dependent care credit for private school?
Not for tuition from kindergarten up. IRS Publication 503 says expenses to attend kindergarten or a higher grade aren't care expenses. Before- and after-school care for a child in school may still qualify, as can preschool below kindergarten.
Is tuition at a school for children with learning disabilities deductible?
It can be a medical expense. IRS Publication 502 lets you include tuition at a school whose main purpose is helping a child overcome learning disabilities, often on a doctor's recommendation. You must itemize, and only medical costs above a share of your income count.
When should I apply for private school financial aid?
Most schools set aid deadlines in winter for the next fall, often alongside admissions. State voucher and ESA windows also tend to open in winter and close in spring. Apply to both at the same time so you know your real cost before you sign an enrollment contract.
