How to use it

  1. Choose your dice

Pick d4, d6, d8, d10, d12 or d20 and set how many dice to roll, from 1 to 10. Use Add to include a bonus or penalty, like +2 in a tabletop game.

  2. Roll

Press Roll or the space bar. The dice tumble across the felt and land. The total and each die's value appear below, and every roll goes into the history.

  3. Watch the odds

After a few rolls, the chart compares how often each total came up with how often it should over many rolls. With two or more dice, the middle totals pull ahead.

  4. Practice math facts

Switch to Math dice, choose addition, multiplication or mixed with 2 or 3 dice, then type the answer. Correct answers roll the next problem automatically.

How to use the dice roller

Choose a die type, set the number of dice and press Roll. The space bar and Enter also roll, so you can keep your hands off the mouse during a game. Results show three ways:

  • On the felt, each die shows its face. Six-sided dice are true 3D cubes with pips; the other dice are drawn in their real shapes with the number on top.
  • In the total, the big number adds every die plus any bonus, with the breakdown underneath (for example, 4 + 6 + 2 + 3 = 15).
  • In the history, the last rolls are listed with their dice and totals. Clear starts it over.

The Add control is for games that add a bonus to a roll, like "roll a d20 and add 3." It can also subtract.

Dice types and what they're used for

DieFacesCommon uses
d44 (a pyramid)Small damage rolls in tabletop games, quick 1–4 choices
d66 (a cube)Board games, Yahtzee-style games, most classroom math games
d88Tabletop games, multiplication facts to 8
d1010Percentages (two d10s make 1–100), place value games
d1212Times tables to 12, months of the year
d2020Role-playing games (the classic d20 roll), number sense to 20

Dice and probability

Dice are the easiest way to see probability in action. One fair die is flat: every face is equally likely. Add a second die and the totals stop being equal.

With two six-sided dice there are 36 possible rolls. Only one way makes 2 (1 and 1), but six ways make 7. So 7 comes up six times as often as 2. That's why the chart under the dice shows a hill shape after enough rolls of 2d6, and why the hill gets taller and narrower as you add dice.

The chart shows your actual totals as bars and the expected number for each total as dots. After 10 rolls the bars look random. After 100 they start to hug the dots. This idea, that results settle toward the odds as you repeat an experiment, is called the law of large numbers, and kids can discover it themselves in a few minutes.

Try this: ask your child to predict which total of two dice will come up most in 50 rolls. Most kids guess their favorite number or 12. Roll 50 times and look at the chart together.

Math dice for fact practice

Math dice turns a roll into a fact to solve. Choose:

  • Addition, multiplication or mixed
  • d6, d10 or d12 to set the size of the numbers
  • 2 or 3 dice to set how many numbers to combine

Type the answer and press Check (or Enter). A correct answer shows a green message and rolls the next problem. A wrong answer shows the right one and waits for you to move on. The score line keeps correct answers, your streak and your best streak for the session.

Three dice of addition with d6 is a good level for first and second graders building mental math. Multiplication with two d10s covers facts to 10 × 10; two d12s cover the full times tables. For printable practice, pair it with the addition worksheet generator and the multiplication worksheet generator, and read our guide to math facts fluency.

Classroom and family game ideas

  • Race to 100: take turns rolling two dice and adding the total to your score. First to 100 wins. Use d10s for a faster game.
  • Biggest product: each player rolls two dice and multiplies; the biggest product wins the round.
  • Place value: roll three d10s (use 0 for a 10) and build the largest and smallest three-digit numbers you can.
  • Turn order: everyone rolls a d20; highest goes first.

Random choices and saved data

The tool requests browser cryptographic random values where available and falls back to ordinary browser randomness if that API is unavailable. It is designed for classroom activities, not audited prize drawings. Repeated results are possible; an equal chance does not promise equal counts in a short session. Saved lists stay in this browser when storage is available. Clearing browser data removes them, and private browsing or blocked storage can prevent persistence. Use labels or initials on a shared device.

Questions

Is this dice roller random?

Yes. Every die is rolled with the browser's random-number generator, so each face has the same chance on every roll. The animation always lands on the number that was rolled.

What do d4, d6, d8, d10, d12 and d20 mean?

The number after the d is how many sides the die has. A d6 is an ordinary cube numbered 1 to 6; a d20 has 20 faces numbered 1 to 20. Tabletop role-playing games use the full set, and classrooms use them for math games.

What is the most common total with two dice?

Seven. There are six ways to make 7 with two six-sided dice (1+6, 2+5, 3+4 and the reverse) out of 36 possible rolls, so it comes up 1 time in 6. Totals of 2 and 12 have only one way each, so they come up 1 time in 36.

How does math dice mode work?

The dice roll a problem, such as 4 + 6 + 3 or 5 × 6, and you type the answer. The game tracks how many you get right, your current streak and your best streak. Use d10 or d12 for bigger facts.

Can I roll without sound or motion?

Untick Sound for silent rolls. If your device asks for reduced motion, the dice change instantly without tumbling.
