A 30 second typing test is a fast way to warm up or check a new skill. It's short enough for young kids to stay focused and quick enough to repeat a few times in a row. Some elementary keyboarding programs use 30 second timings for beginners for the same reasons.
This version starts with common words: the most frequent words in English, the classic speed-test setup. Change the text to passages, sentences, or numbers and punctuation, and the level from K-2 to 9-12. Because short tests reward a quick burst, scores usually run a few WPM higher than on a 1 minute test, so compare 30 second scores only with each other.
Tips for using it
- Use three 30 second tests as a warm-up before practice, then move to drills.
- For young kids, start at the K-2 level, which has bigger text and short words.
- Look at accuracy first. A 30 second test with 100 percent accuracy is a great day.

Why is my 30 second score higher than my 1 minute score?
Short tests let you type at your peak the whole time. Over a full minute, small pauses and mistakes add up, so most people score a little lower.
Is a 30 second test good for kids?
Yes. It's short enough for beginners to stay focused, and kids can try again right away. Use the K-2 or 3-5 level so the words match their reading.
