This typing test for kids uses short, original passages written for each grade band, from simple K-2 stories about cats, puddles and seeds to grade 3-5 nonfiction about bees, maps and the moon. The K-2 level shows bigger text, and every level counts only what your child types correctly, the same way school benchmarks do.
Choose the level that matches your child's reading, not just their grade, and start with the 1 minute test. Results show words per minute, accuracy and the keys they missed most, plus a history chart saved on this device so you can watch progress over weeks.
A common goal is about 5 WPM per grade from 3rd grade on, with high accuracy: around 15 WPM in 3rd grade and 25 WPM in 5th. Younger children are still learning where the keys are, so for them accuracy and good habits matter far more than speed.
Tips for using it
- Pick the level by reading ability. A struggling reader types slower because of the reading, not the typing.
- Celebrate accuracy. 95 percent or better at any speed means the habits are right.
- Test once a week at most; practice and games on the other days.

How fast should a child type?
There's no national standard. Typing.com suggests about 15 WPM in 3rd grade, 20 in 4th, 25 in 5th and 30 in 6th, with 85 to 100 percent accuracy. Kindergarten to 2nd grade focuses on learning the keys rather than speed.
What age can kids take a typing test?
Once a child can read simple sentences and knows where most letters are, usually around 1st or 2nd grade. Before that, letter games are a better fit than timed tests.
Is this typing test safe for kids?
Yes. There are no ads, no chat and no account, and nothing your child types leaves the browser. Scores are saved only on your device.
