Short i is the sound in pig and itch. It's often the second vowel children learn, right after short a, because the two are easy to tell apart: cat and kit feel very different in the mouth.
This list gives the short i CVC words from our bank in five families, -it, -in, -ip, -ig and -id, plus bib, rib, dim, him and rim. The -ip family is the largest, so it's a good place to practice changing just the first sound: dip, hip, lip, rip, sip, tip, zip.
When your child can read these smoothly, put short a and short i together in a sort. Seeing hat and hit side by side is what makes a child actually look at the vowel.
It's the vowel sound in it, sit and fish. Long i says its name, as in bike or light.
In many programs, yes. Short a and short i are easy to contrast, while short e is easier to confuse with short i, so it often comes last.
