Short o is the sound in dog and hot, said with a round, open mouth (the sound you make when the doctor asks you to say "ah"). It's a clear, stretchy vowel that most children hear easily.

This list has the short o CVC words from our bank in five families, -ot, -op, -og, -ob and -od, plus mom. The -ot family is the biggest, with nine everyday words from cot to rot.

A good next step is a three-way sort with short a and short i, or the short o word ladder: hot to hop to top to tip changes one sound at a time and keeps your child reading every letter.

Tips for using it

  • Exaggerate the round mouth on short o. Kids who watch your mouth often hear the vowel better.
  • Read short o and short a pairs aloud (hot, hat; mop, map) so your child listens for the vowel.
