L-blends pair a consonant with l at the start of a word: bl, cl, fl, gl, pl and sl. Both sounds stay, so black is /b/ /l/ /a/ /k/, four sounds.
This list has about 50 l-blend words, grouped by blend. Every word has a short vowel, and most are CVC words with an l added (lap to clap, lot to plot), which is a nice way to introduce blends: read the CVC word, then add the first letter.
L-blends are often taught first among beginning blends because the l is easy to hear and hold. Speech-language therapists also use l-blend lists for articulation practice, and the same list works for that.
Tips for using it
- Build the blend from a word your child knows: lip, then slip; lot, then plot.
- Hold the l a little longer when you model: f-lll-ag. It keeps kids from skipping it.

What are l blends?
L blends are consonant blends that end in l: bl, cl, fl, gl, pl and sl, as in black, clam, flag, glad, plug and slip.
Is sl an l-blend or an s-blend?
Both. It starts with s and ends with l, so you'll see it on both lists. It's on our l-blends and s-blends worksheets.
