Cursive capitals are where most kids (and parents) get stuck, because several look nothing like their print versions. Capital Q looks like a 2, capital I starts at the bottom, G and S start with a long upstroke from the baseline, and Z drops a loop below the line. This sheet gives each capital two rows: a numbered, arrowed model with dotted copies to trace, then a row of start dots to write on.

Capitals F, H, K, T and X take more than one stroke; the numbers on the model show which stroke comes first. Work on two or three capitals a day, ideally ones that start your child's name and the names of family members, because those are the capitals they will actually write.

For capital-to-lowercase joins in real words, use the sentence rows on each single-letter cursive page.

Tips for using it

  • Group capitals that start alike: U, V, W, Y, M, N, K, H all begin with the same small cap curve at the top line.
  • Practice the capital of your child's first name until it is automatic. It is the capital they will use most.

Questions

Do cursive capital letters connect to the next letter?

Many do, and some traditionally do not. In this model each capital leads into the lowercase letter after it, as you can see in names. Some programs teach that capitals such as D, O, P, V and W stop before the next letter; either is acceptable as long as the spacing looks even.

Which cursive capitals are the hardest?

Q, G, I, J and Z tend to be the hardest, because their shapes differ the most from print. Give them extra rows and compare each with its print form.
