How to write a lowercase q in cursive: Start at the midline and make an oval like an a. Pull straight down below the baseline, make a small loop that turns to the right, climb back to the baseline, and exit.
This sheet starts with large models of capital Q and lowercase q, with a green start dot, numbered strokes, and arrows that show which way the pencil travels. Then come two rows for each form: trace, then write from the start dots. Page two joins q into the words "queen" and "quilt" and the sentence "Quinn has a quilt", so your child practices the capital and the lowercase joins in real writing.
Cursive q is one of the oval letters (a, c, d, g, o, q), which begin at the midline and curve back to the left. When q feels easy, practice a, c, d, g next, or print the full cursive alphabet chart.
Tips for using it
- The lower loop of q turns to the right. If it turns left, the letter turns into a g, so compare 'g' and 'q' side by side.
- Lowercase q is nearly always followed by u, so practice 'qu' as one unit, as in 'queen' and 'quilt'.

Questions
How do you write a capital Q in cursive?
Capital Q looks like a tall number 2. Start on the baseline, loop up and around to the right to the top line, come back down, cross near the bottom, and finish with a wavy line along the baseline. The model at the top of the sheet numbers each stroke, so your child can see where to lift the pencil.
Why does cursive q look so different?
Capital Q surprises many parents because it looks like a 2 rather than an O with a tail. If your child's school uses a different model, its Q may look different.
When should kids learn cursive q?
Most programs introduce cursive in 2nd or 3rd grade, once print letters are automatic. Cursive q is taught with the other oval letters (a, c, d, g, o, q), so it often comes once the undercurve and loop letters are comfortable.
