Sentences build the two things single words cannot: even spacing between words and a steady size across a full line. These four sentences use every kind of join, start with a capital, and fit on one row each at the small line size, which is closest to notebook paper. Each sentence is traced twice, copied once, and written on its own.

Use this page once your child can write most lowercase letters without a model. Replace the sentences with copywork from a book, poem or Bible verse, a common way homeschool families combine handwriting with reading. Cursive here is letters only, so leave out punctuation, or add it by hand.

Tips for using it

  • Leave the width of a lowercase o between words. Spacing is the most common problem in cursive sentences.
  • Check slant by drawing a few light lines through the tall letters. They should lean the same way.

Questions

What sentences are good for cursive practice?

Short sentences with common words and a mix of joins. Pangrams such as "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" cover every letter but are long, so they work better on small lines or for older students.

When should kids move from cursive words to sentences?

When they can write most lowercase letters and common joins without tracing. For many children that is the middle or end of the first year of cursive.
