How to write a lowercase p in cursive: Undercurve from the baseline up to the midline, pull a long line down below the baseline, loop back up, then make a rounded hump at the midline that comes down to the baseline and exits.
This sheet starts with large models of capital P and lowercase p, with a green start dot, numbered strokes, and arrows that show which way the pencil travels. Then come two rows for each form: trace, then write from the start dots. Page two joins p into the words "pig" and "pan" and the sentence "Pam packs a picnic", so your child practices the capital and the lowercase joins in real writing.
Cursive p is one of the undercurve letters (i, t, u, w, r, s, p, j), which all begin with a scooping stroke up from the baseline. When p feels easy, practice i, t, u, w next, or print the full cursive alphabet chart.
Tips for using it
- Kids often lift the pencil after the long stem. Keep going: the line loops back up and makes the bump in one stroke.
- Say the strokes out loud while writing p, for example: "scoop up, slide down, swing away". Saying it keeps the shape consistent from row to row.

Questions
How do you write a capital P in cursive?
Capital P starts at the midline with an upward curve to the top line, pulls the slanted stem down to the baseline, retraces up, and makes one bump that closes at the middle of the stem. The model at the top of the sheet numbers each stroke, so your child can see where to lift the pencil.
How does cursive p connect to the next letter?
The bump ends on the baseline, so p joins the next letter from the bottom, as in 'pig' and 'pan'.
When should kids learn cursive p?
Most programs introduce cursive in 2nd or 3rd grade, once print letters are automatic. Cursive p is taught with the other undercurve letters (i, t, u, w, r, s, p, j), so it often comes early, because undercurve letters are the simplest.
