How to write the letter F: Capital F is a line down, then a line across the top and a shorter line across the middle. Lowercase f starts below the top line with a small hook, curves over and down to the baseline, then gets a cross at the midline.
This printable opens with big models of F and f: start at the green dot, follow the numbered strokes and the arrows. Your child then traces a row of each and writes more from the start dots. The next pages add the words "fish" and "fan" to trace and copy, plus the sentence "Frogs can hop far." on large, preschool-size lines.
Short, daily practice works better than one long session. One page a day for a few days is plenty at ages 4 to 6. When F is easy, move on to letter G or print the whole alphabet tracing set.
Tips for using it
- A hook that curves the wrong way makes a backward f. The hook curves to the right, like a candy cane.
- Use a short pencil or a crayon broken in half; small tools encourage a better grip. For children not ready for lowercase, set Letter case to Uppercase only.
Questions
What sound does the letter F make?
F says /f/ as in fish, fan and frog. Saying the sound each time your child writes f links handwriting to phonics.
What are some easy words that start with F?
Try fish, fan, frog. The sheet uses fish and fan because they are short, so the focus stays on forming the letter. Change the words with the generator if your child knows others.
