How to write a lowercase f in cursive: Undercurve up to the top line and loop to the left. Pull one long, slanted line down through the baseline to the descender line, make a lower loop that swings back up to close at the baseline, and exit up to the right.
This sheet starts with large models of capital F and lowercase f, with a green start dot, numbered strokes, and arrows that show which way the pencil travels. Then come two rows for each form: trace, then write from the start dots. Page two joins f into the words "fish" and "fan" and the sentence "Frogs can hop far", so your child practices the capital and the lowercase joins in real writing.
Cursive f is one of the loop letters (e, l, h, k, b, f), which begin with an undercurve and loop back at the top. When f feels easy, practice e, l, h, k next, or print the full cursive alphabet chart.
Tips for using it
- The usual problem is a lower loop that never closes, so the f looks like an l with a tail. Bring the lower loop back up to touch the stem at the baseline.
- The lower loop ends at the baseline and flows straight into the next letter, as in 'fish' and 'fan' on this sheet.

Questions
How do you write a capital F in cursive?
Capital F takes three strokes: a wavy cap along the top line, a stem that starts at the top right and curves down to the baseline before curling back up, and a short crossbar at the midline. The model at the top of the sheet numbers each stroke, so your child can see where to lift the pencil.
Why does cursive f look so different?
Lowercase f is the only letter in this cursive alphabet that loops both above the midline and below the baseline, which is why it gets searched so often.
When should kids learn cursive f?
Most programs introduce cursive in 2nd or 3rd grade, once print letters are automatic. Cursive f is taught with the other loop letters (e, l, h, k, b, f), so it often comes right after the undercurve letters.
