Each digit from 0 to 9 gets a ten-frame, a box of ten squares with that many dots filled in, followed by a row to trace and a row to write from start dots. Counting the dots first ties the shape of the numeral to the amount it stands for, which is the point of learning numbers at all. The model digit carries numbered strokes and arrows, so your child forms 5, 4 and 8 the same way every time.
Most digits start at the top. The trickiest are 5 (two strokes: down and around, then the flag on top), 4 (two strokes), and 8 (one continuous S-curve that comes back up). Reversed 2, 3, 7 and 9 are common and usually fade by around age 7. For larger numbers, try number tracing 1 to 20.
Tips for using it
- Have your child touch each dot in the ten-frame while counting aloud before tracing the number.
- Turn on Trace the number word to add a row for zero, one, two and so on.

At what age should kids trace numbers?
Many children trace numbers between ages 3 and 5, often alongside letters. Counting objects should come first; tracing works best once a child knows what the number means.
Why does my child write numbers backward?
Reversing digits like 3, 7 and 9 is a common stage that usually fades by around age 7. Starting each number at the green dot and saying the strokes aloud helps.
