Numbers 11 to 20 are where place value begins. On this sheet each teen number shows two ten-frames: one full frame of ten and a second frame with the extra ones, so 14 is visibly ten and four. Then your child traces the two-digit numeral and writes it from the start dots. Numbers 1 to 10 come first as a warm-up.
The common mistake with teen numbers is writing the digits in the order they are heard: fourteen sounds like four-ten, so children write 41. The full ten-frame on the left matches the 1 written on the left, which helps. Number words are off to keep the set compact; turn them on for extra reading practice.
Tips for using it
- Say teen numbers as "ten and four" while pointing to each ten-frame, then say "fourteen."
- Print only 11 to 20 by choosing it in the Numbers menu.
Questions
Why do kids write 41 instead of 14?
English teen names put the ones first (four-teen), so children write what they hear. Showing ten and four with two ten-frames, and always writing the 1 first, usually sorts it out.
When should kids write numbers to 20?
Writing numbers to 20 is a common kindergarten goal, after counting to 20 is secure.
