This set takes each number from 1 to 10 through three steps: count the dots in the ten-frame, trace the numeral, then trace its number word (one, two, three...). Number words are the bridge to reading word problems later, and kindergarten is a good time to start seeing them. Ten gets a full ten-frame, which shows why 10 is written with two digits.
The lines are medium-size to fit the extra word row. For younger children, switch Line size to Large and turn off Trace the number word. Once 1 to 10 is solid, go on to number tracing 1 to 20.
Tips for using it
- After the sheet, ask your child to show each number on their fingers. It reinforces the ten-frame.
- Point out the silent letters and odd spellings, like the w in two and the gh in eight.
Questions
Should kindergarteners learn to write number words?
Reading number words is a common kindergarten and 1st grade goal; writing them usually comes a little later. Tracing them, as on this sheet, is a gentle first step.
How do I teach numbers 1 to 10?
Count real objects, match them to ten-frame dots, then trace and write the numeral. Practicing a few numbers a day for a couple of weeks works well.
